Your return-to-duty roadmap
Understand the steps before you book.
The SAP evaluation is the starting point. Returning to safety-sensitive work requires additional steps.
- Stop safety-sensitive work after a DOT violation. Confirm your violation information and employer contact.
- Complete the initial SAP evaluation. The SAP assesses your situation and recommends education and/or treatment.
- Complete the recommendations. Keep completion records. There is no universal number of days for this step.
- Attend the SAP follow-up evaluation. The SAP determines whether you have successfully complied and reports to the employer.
- Complete the employer-arranged return-to-duty test. Required results must be met before a return to safety-sensitive duties. Drug return-to-duty tests are directly observed.
- Follow the testing plan after returning. The employer implements the SAP’s follow-up plan, separate from random testing.
A favorable SAP follow-up report does not itself authorize you to drive or guarantee reinstatement. Confirm the remaining requirements with your employer and, when applicable, your licensing agency.
Practical questions for North State workers
If you work rotating routes or live outside Redding, discuss scheduling and evaluation format before traveling. Ask education or treatment providers about availability and attendance requirements; do not assume all services can be completed online.
Owner-operator without a current employer?
Coordinate the employer-side return-to-duty requirements with your consortium/third-party administrator. Do not substitute a self-ordered personal test.
